Adobe Introduces AI Assistant for Photoshop and Expands Firefly Image Editing Tools

Adobe is taking another major step into artificial intelligence by launching a new AI assistant for Adobe Photoshop. The feature is now rolling out in beta on the web and mobile versions of Photoshop, giving users smarter ways to edit images using simple text commands.

Alongside this update, Adobe is also expanding the capabilities of Adobe Firefly, its AI powered platform for creating and editing media.

AI Powered Editing With Simple Prompts

Adobe originally introduced the Photoshop AI assistant during the Adobe MAX event in October. The assistant is designed to simplify complex editing tasks by allowing users to describe what they want using natural language.

Instead of navigating multiple menus or tools, users can type commands such as:

  • Remove objects or people from a photo
  • Change the color of specific elements
  • Adjust lighting and shadows
  • Add a soft glow effect
  • Crop images to a specific format
  • Replace or transform the background

This AI driven workflow allows both beginners and professional designers to complete editing tasks much faster while maintaining creative control.

Free and Paid Access to the AI Assistant

Adobe is currently offering different usage limits depending on the type of account.

  • Paid Photoshop subscribers can generate unlimited AI edits until April 9.
  • Free users receive 20 AI generations to try the feature.

This approach allows users to experiment with the new assistant before deciding whether to upgrade their plan.

New AI Markup Feature for Creative Editing

Another feature entering public beta is called AI Markup. This tool allows users to draw directly on the image to guide the AI assistant.

For example, users can:

  • Sketch a rough shape to generate an object like a flower
  • Mark a person or object to remove from a scene
  • Highlight an area to modify or enhance

The AI assistant interprets these visual cues and applies the requested changes automatically. This feature combines manual input with AI processing to create a more interactive editing experience.

Firefly Gains Powerful AI Editing Tools

In addition to improvements in Photoshop, Adobe is expanding the capabilities of Firefly, its generative AI platform designed for media creation.

Several powerful editing features are now being added to Firefly, including:

  • Generative Fill: Add or replace objects in images with AI.
  • Generative Remove: Remove unwanted elements from photos
  • Generative Expand: Increase image size while intelligently filling new space
  • Generative Upscale: Improve image resolution using AI
  • One-click Background Removal: Instantly isolate subjects from the background

Many of these tools were previously exclusive to Photoshop but are now becoming available inside Firefly to streamline the creative workflow.

Integration With Leading AI Models

Adobe has also expanded Firefly’s capabilities by integrating more than 25 third party AI models for image and video generation.

These include technologies from major AI developers such as:

  • OpenAI
  • Google
  • Runway
  • Black Forest Labs

These integrations allow creators to access multiple AI systems within a single creative environment.

Adobe’s Vision for AI Creativity

Adobe recently announced that Firefly subscribers will receive unlimited AI generations, encouraging artists, designers, and content creators to experiment with AI powered tools more freely.

By combining advanced AI models with familiar creative software like Photoshop, Adobe aims to make professional image editing faster, more intuitive, and accessible to a wider audience.

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape digital creativity, tools like the new Photoshop AI assistant demonstrate how designers can collaborate with AI rather than replace traditional creative skills.
